Preston Gossett
Mr. Preston Gossett, 88, of Portales, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring, Texas.
He was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Spanish Fort, Texas, to Ida and Charlie P. Gossett.
He moved to the Upton community west of Floyd in the mid-1930s. He married Ruth Russell on Sept. 2, 1937, in Elida. They farmed in Upton until 1962 when they moved to the west edge of Portales. Even after moving closer to town, he continued to ranch and run cattle until the mid-1990s. Family members said he enjoyed going fishing with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Virgil and Roy Gossett; a sister, Bertha Odom; and his wife, Ruth Gossett.
He is survived by a son, Melburn “Bud” Gossett (and wife, Linda) of Lamesa, Texas; a daughter, Patsy Rains-Roberts (and husband, William “Dub”) of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Clifton Gossett, Travis Gossett and E.J. Gossett, all of Portales.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales. Scott P. Reeves will officiate.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jim Adams, Ty and Rains and Greg, Eric and Jason Gossett.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Mae Heflin
Ms. Mae Heflin, 80, of Portales, died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
She was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Salano, to Edna and W.H. Heflin.
She had been a resident of Portales for more than 70 years. She worked at Heflin Lumber Yard, where she hung wallpaper in houses. She worked on the family farm, driving the hay truck or baling and stacking hay. She drove a school bus for more than 30 years and she was a licensed beautician. She was a member of the Baptist Church and the Friendship Homemakers Club. Family members said her hobbies included ceramics.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, W.G. and Gerald Heflin; and three sisters, Lil Simpson, Opal Massey and Vernie “Pickle” Trapp.
He is survived by a son, Bud Miller (and wife, Barbara) of Portales; a daughter, Margaret Brake (and husband, Kenneth) of Amarillo; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, George A. Heflin of Littlefield, Texas; a sister, Nancy Jo Brown of Clovis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fellowship Hall of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Portales. Family members will officiate.
