Donald Crockett, 67
Mr. Donald R. Crockett, 67, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Life Care Center in Farmington.
He was born Aug. 5, 1936, in Comanche, Okla., to Virginia and Eddie Crockett.
He grew up in Portales. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1960 and his master’s degree in 1966. He taught in Roswell for 27 years. He went on to become a leader in the Roswell Education Association, serving as area representative, vice president and president. He went on staff for National Education Association-New Mexico in 1988. He had previously been a part-time organizer. He retired from the organization earlier this year.
Family members said he wanted to be remembered as a fair person who worked diligently on behalf of all the members of NEA-NM. They recall he said his most memorable success was in college when he hit a golf ball 422 yards on the No. 2 hole on the Portales County Club and added that while growing up, he and his brother loved playing pranks such as hiding under bleachers and grabbing people by the ankles.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Survivors include a nephew, Shane Crockett of Portales; a sister-in-law, Melivna Crockett of Portales; and a number of cousins.
Wheeler Mortuary of Portales is handling arrangements. Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Portales Cemetery.
Maria Tarango, 78
Mrs. Maria E. Tarango, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
She was born Dec. 28, 1924, Chanate, Texas, to Faustina and Cruz Esqueda.
She had been a resident of Portales since 1955. She married Jose Tarango on May 14, 1958. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Pasquala Esqueda; and by her husband, who died Feb. 29, 2000.
Survivors include four sons, Jesse Tarango of Andrews, Texas, Jose Manuel Tarango Jr. of Moses Lake, Wash., Raymond Tarango of Las Vegas, N.M., and Cruz Tarango of Portales; six daughters, Socorro Franco of Andrews, Melinda Tarango of Fort Worth, Texas, and Virginia Gallegos, Nicky Mondragon, Juanita Tarango and Tina Bacerra, all of Portales; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Severa Alvarado of Indio, Calif.
A rosary was recited Friday at St. Helen Catholic Church.
Father Tobin Hitt officiated the services.
Burial was in Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jesse Tarango, Jose Manuel Tarango Jr., Raymond Tarango, Cruz Tarango, Manuel Antonio Tarango, Manuel Franco, Joey Montoya, Vincent Montoya, Jesse Tarango Jr., Lydia Mounce, Juanito Garza and Rachel Gallegos.
Wheeler Mortuary of Portales is handling arrangements. Services have been held.
Joana Wilson, 72
Joana Kathryn Wilson, 72, of Carlsbad, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
She was born Jan. 15, 1931, in Hamlin, Texas, to Thomas and Irene Hudson Dixon.
She grew up in Hobbs, and moved to Carlsbad as a teenager. She attended Carslbad schools through the 10th grade. She married Andrew D. Rice at the age of 16. They divorced in 1963. She married Robert N. Wilson in 1965, and lived in Dora and Portales. After her husband was injured in 1973, she worked as a nursing assistant at Roosevelt General Hospital while maintaining the family farm and caring for her husband. in 1984, she earned her GED, and later received an LPN certificate from Eastern New Mexico University-Clovis. In 1994, she suffered a health crisis which forced her to learn to speak, walk and care for herself again. In 1998, she went on kidney dialysis and retired from nursing. She was a lifelong Jehovah’s Witness.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Melvin Dixon; a niece, Norma Jean Morgan; and her husband, Robert N. Wilson.
Surivors include a sister, Jean (and husband, Joe) Morgan of Yuba City, Calif.; three sons, Ron (and wife, Claudia) Rice of Green River, Wyo., Bill (and wife, Nanette) Rice of Portales and Thomas Wilson of Gallup; two daughters, Anita Self of Carlsbad and Janet (and husband, Carl) Young of Amarillo; grandchildren Jordan Self, Sam, Ben and Sarah Rice, Chris Juarez, Jim Bryson and C.C., Richard and Chad Mebane; stepchildren Danny and Janet Wilson and Ruth Ann Richards, all of Madill, Okla.; and two great-grandsons.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at West Funeral Home in Carlsbad.
Dale Kaylor will officiate the services.
Pallbearers will be Carl Young, James Bryson, Bryan Juarez, Randy Self, Ron Rice, Bill Rice, Joe Morgan and Tom Wilson.
