The first-year Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team played competitively in a 1-0 loss to the Midland (Texas) Alliance Under-19 club team Saturday in the Zias’ initial scrimmage.
ENMU, which opens the regular season on Aug. 29 against College of the Southwest in a four-team get-together at Adams State College in Anamosa, Colo., has two more scrimmages before then. The Zias host Cochise (Ariz.) Community College on Monday and the Lubbock Ice Under-19 club team on Saturday, with both matches scheduled for 3 p.m. at the ENMU soccer field.
With Eastern playing tentatively early, Midland Alliance managed to score what turned into the contest’s only goal in the 16th minute of the first half. Michelle Solari hauled in a long crossfield pass from Beth Craig, moved around charging ENMU goalkeeper Carolyn Vincent and hit an empty net from 15 yards away near the right side of the penalty box.
Both teams had chances to score after that, only to be turned away. Midland Alliance outshot the Zias 14-7, including a 10-5 edge in shots on goal.
ENMU freshman midfielder Anna Funck prevented a Midland Alliance score after a cross from the left side bounced just in bounds and to the right side of the goal. A Midland player hit a slow-moving shot that rolled just outside the goalline which Funck cleared away as it neared the left post.
