School officials representing all eight Portales schools presented goals for improving various programs and learning techniques at the Portales Municipal School Board meeting Monday night.
Alicia Hatch, special education instructor at Steiner Elementary, wrapped up the presentation by saying Portales schools are quite close to being a benchmark of overall success statewide.
Portales schools base learning on the teachings of Malcolm Baldrige, whose system of achieving success has garnered national attention.
His methods reflect validated, leading-edge management practices against which an organization can measure itself. With their acceptance nationally and internationally as the model for performance excellence, the Criteria represent a common language for communication among organizations for sharing best practices, according to the Baldrige National Quality Program Web site .
Beyond his book titled “Education Criteria for Performance Excellence,” Baldrige has also published literature on how to run a successful business and excellence in health care.
Also at the meeting:
Nat Gomez, maintenance director of Portales schools, said the Portales Junior High School gymnasium should be complete by Nov. 18.
“We are pretty excited,” he said.
Gomez said the gym floor needs just two more coats of seal, and PJHS officials hope to be using the gym by Nov. 20.
