Portales girls win at St. Michael’s tournament

SANTA FE — The Lady Rams took care of business early, beating Los Alamos 53-36 in the first round of the Lady Horsemen Invitational Christmas Tournament at St. Michael’s High School.
Portales (5-2) maintained a comfortable lead throughout en route to its fourth win in five games. The Lady Rams only had two players in double figures — Kassandra Richards with 13 and Erika Cook with 10 — but got nine from Ashleah Richards, eight from Morgan Hill and seven from Roni Gomez.
Despite the balance on offense, the Portales coaches felt that the play at the other end of the floor made the difference.
“We felt like we came out and played a little better defensively earlier,” Portales assistant Greg Poynor said. “We shut them down quite a bit and that got us going on offense.”
Portales faces Santa Fe High tonight at 6 p.m.
Mackenzie Wehrner led Los Alamos with eight points.
