A high school teacher from Texico, Dennis J. Roch, has announced his candidacy for the District 9 seat on the Public Education Commission.
The new board replaces what was previously known as the State Board of Education. The Public Education Commission was formed in September after voters approved Constitutional Amendment 1 in a special election.
According to the commission’s Web site, District 9 covers much of eastern and southeast New Mexico, including the cities of Carlsbad, Clovis, Dora, Eunice, Floyd, Grady, Hobbs, House, Jal, Logan, Loving, Lovington, Melrose, Portales, San Jon, Tatum, Texico and Tucumcari and is currently served by Scott Barthel of Hobbs.
Roch said in a prepared statement that Barthel is not running for re-election.
Roch said he is a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University and served on the staffs of U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici and U.S. Rep. Bill Redmond before joining the Texico High School faculty.
