A Portales woman won a $50,000 prize on Saturday after she scratched a winning lottery ticket while working at the locally operated KC Express No. 4.
Rachel Martinez, who is the manager of KC Express, said she claimed a check totaling $34,500 after taxes on Monday in Albuquerque. She said she has already spent most of the money, buying a new truck, paying off some bills and giving $10,000 to her sister and brother-in-law.
Martinez is the third person to win the $50,000 top prize allocated from the $5 scratcher game. The odds of winning the top prize are 160,000 to one, according to N.M. Lottery spokesperson Nadine Guillen.
When Martinez won she called her sister.
“My brother-in-law answered the phone and I was just so excited and (he) tells me, ‘Are you sure you didn’t win just $500’ and I told him no it’s $50,000,” Martinez said.
Martinez said she also earned a stroke of luck about five years ago when she scored a $1,000 prize from a scratch off game. She said she spends about $10 a week on lottery tickets.
