ARTESIA — Morgan Hill scored a season-high 17 to lead four in double figures, and the Lady Rams outscored Artesia 20-6 in the first quarter en route to a 65-27 win Friday night at the Bulldog Pit.
Portales (11-3) also got 16 from Erika Cook, 11 from Kassandra Richards and 10 from Ashleah Richards.
Lady Ram coach Brenda Gomez felt her team didn’t play a great game against the Lady Bulldogs, owning to a drop in intensity after beating Artesia 63-23 in the season opener.
“It’s hard to go out and play after you’ve beat somebody by 40 and keep the intensity (in a rematch),” Gomez said. “Those games are just hard.”
The Lady Rams have always tried to play teams of higher classification in their pre-district schedule, but recent years have seen Portales win in blowouts against Roswell and Artesia — teams that have had bad seasons coincide with the Lady Rams’ successful ones.
“Their seasons just haven’t been as good as they have been in the past,” Gomez said. “You’ve got to play to your potential, no matter what’s going on on the court.”
The Lady Rams will, however, get a challenge on Tuesday. Portales goes on the road to face Clovis, which has accounted for two of the Lady Rams’ three defeats on the year.
