Local broadcast to hear from viewers

Two televised shows this week on the local KENW-TV broadcast network will allow viewers to speak with experts on issues regarding the area’s water supply and with senators on the upcoming Legislative Session.
Panelists from local and state agencies will be on hand to answer questions about water issues when KENW-TV broadcasts “Just Add Water: Facing New Mexico’s Water Issues,” live from 8 to 9 p.m. on Thursday.
In a separate show, state senators Rod Adair, Clint Hardin and Gay Kernan will appear on KENW-TV’s Legislative Town Hall meeting from 7 – 8 p.m. tonight.
Tonight’s program will highlight issues to be discussed during the upcoming Legislative Session which begins Tuesday in Santa Fe.

Thursday’s program will include panelists Estevan Lopez, director of the state Interstate Stream Commission; Lee Tillman, executive director of the Eastern Plains Council of Governments and author of a regional water plan; David Lansford, Clovis mayor and chairman of the Eastern New Mexico Rural Water Authority; and Charles Wilson, a hydrology consultant.
“It’s the mission of KENW-TV to provide programming to our viewing audience that provides education on issues that surround our world, our communities, our lives,” show producer and Portales Mayor Orlando Ortega said.
U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, a local farmer and rancher from Fort Sumner and New Mexico State Engineer John D’Antonio will also add input, Ortega said.
During the first half of the hour-long program, the panelists will discuss the challenges New Mexico faces with its water resources. Issues will include New Mexico’s drought, water compacts, aquifers, acequias, conservation and pipeline projects. Policy-making, water planning and projects aimed at providing water to regions and communities statewide also will be discussed.
During the second half of the program, viewers will be able to call in questions about water issues to the panelists on a toll-free number, 1-888-367-5369.
