LUBBOCK — Down to their final two outs, the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals pushed over two ninth-inning runs despite hitting only one ball out of the infield to edge Eastern New Mexico University 5-4 in college baseball Tuesday.
Sophomore Jesse Garcia-Perez, ENMU’s third pitcher of the day, worked two scoreless innings before running into trouble after getting a flyout to center to start the LCU ninth.
A walk, a single and an error loaded the bases before a walk to the Chaparrals’ Aurio O’Neill forced in the tying run. Travis Pendley then hit a grounder to ENMU first baseman Mark Wallace, but his throw to the plate trying for a forceout was too late.
The Greyhounds (1-4) opened a 4-1 lead with a four-run fourth highlighted by Wallace’s RBI single and a run-scoring double by shortstop Josh Kuchta.
LCU plated a run in the first, then added single runs in the fifth and sixth off ENMU starter Josh Stephenson. O’Neill and Pendley each had two RBIs for the Chaps (6-3).
LCU outhit the Hounds 7-6. Kuchta was the only ENMU player with more than one hit, going 2-for-3.
