ROSWELL — Both Portales teams responded from a tough opening match, and each finished in third place at the Goddard Invitational tennis tournament, held Friday and Saturday by Goddard and Roswell High School.
The tournament puts both Portales teams at 2-1 on the season heading into its home opener. PHS faces Caprock, Texas, and Las Vegas Robertson March 6 at the Bill Wahlman Tennis Complex.
Hobbs was the first round opponent for both Portales teams — the Hobbs girls eventually won the tournament after a 8-1 win over Portales, and the Hobbs boys finished second to New Mexico Military Institute after beating the Rams 9-0.
Both Portales teams had easy wins in their next two matches, as the boys took 9-0 wins against Roswell and Artesia. The girls, meanwhile, lost just two singles flights during wins over NMMI and a junior varsity team constructed for the tournament.
Morgan Erf won all three of her matches in No. 3 singles and combined with Jessica Bulls to win two out of three doubles flights as the No. 2 team. Also competing for the Portales girls were Hailey Quick, Rachelle Self, Kaycee Quick and Bethany Self.
Competing for the boys were Bryan Yeast, Chance Plummer, Chase Acker, Travis Holt, Nathan Acker and Bronson Riser.
