ROSWELL — The Portales girls tennis team lost only five flights in five matches en route to a first-place finish in Roswell Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Rams (13-2) competed in a round-robin tournament against Goddard, Roswell, Farmington, New Mexico Military Institute and Robertson. The Portales boys (11-4) competed against the same teams, with a junior varsity squad assembled in place of NMMI, and took third.
Matches were played in district format — players competed in doubles or singles but not both.
Morgan Erf won all five of her flights in No. 3 singles, while Bethany Self and Kassandra Short went 5-0 in No. 2 doubles. Also competing for Portales were Hailey Quick (3-2 in No. 1 singles), Rachelle Self (4-1 in No. 2 singles) and Jessica Bulls and Kaycee Quick (4-1 in No. 1 doubles).
Travis Holt and Logan Brown went 5-0 in No. 2 doubles for the boys team, while Chris Kirchner went 4-1 in No. 3 singles. Also competing for Portales were Bryan Yeast (2-3 in No. 1 singles), Chance Plummer (3-2 in No. 2 singles) and Chase and Nathan Acker (2-3 in No. 1 doubles).
Portales will be idle until April 6, when both teams host Artesia.
