CLOVIS — Roosevelt County, victims of a technicality on Monday, have been declared winners of the District 3 Little League 9-10-year-old baseball tournament.
Roosevelt County beat the Clovis American All-Stars, 11-1, in Monday’s finals, but had to forfeit after the Clovis team protested.
On Tuesday, American League president Sherry Best said she talked to Clovis Manager Thom Moore and the decision was made not to play the “if necessary” game, which had been scheduled tonight.
Instead, Roosevelt County will represent the district in state competition next week at Taos.
Roosevelt County had completed an unbeaten run though the tournament on Monday night with its rout of American at Beachum Field. It had to forfeit when American protested the fact that Roosevelt’s three subs had not batted in a game shortened to 3 1/2 innings by the 10-run rule.
That necessitated a second game, but Best said Moore and his staff didn’t feel right about it.
“Our coaches really hated to take it away from the Roosevelt County kids (on a technicality),” she said. “The coaches thought (the forfeit) was the right thing to do, and I’m really proud of them for that.”
