ELIDA — Coming off a championship in a weekend tournament hosted by the Roswell Goddard junior varsity, the Elida volleyball team improved to 7-1 for the season on Monday night by sweeping past Tucumcari 25-20, 25-19, 25-19.
Lady Tigers coach Darrell Chenault said the team was helped by the return from injury over the weekend of senior setter Casey Ford. After finishing second in pool play at Goddard, Elida beat the Hobbs JV and the Goddard “C” and JV squads in bracket play to win the tournament.
Elida has now swept the Lady Rattlers twice this season, but Chenault said it was tougher this time.
“Tucumcari is danged sure improving,” he said. “They played us pretty tough tonight.”
The Lady Tigers begin District 3-1A action on Thursday at home against Melrose.
In preliminary action on Monday, Elida won the junior high match 25-9, 11-25, 15-4 while Tucumcari took the JV matchup.
