RUIDOSO — After a tough pre-district schedule, the Portales Lady Rams weren’t able to get it going Saturday in their District 4-3A opener and dropped a 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 decision to the Ruidoso Lady Warriors.
Portales (3-11, 0-1) returns to action tonight with a 6:30 p.m. district clash against Lovington at the PHS gym. A junior varsity match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
Portales coach Ruth Chavez said her team was mistake-prone against Ruidoso, giving up 14 points on errors in the first game alone.
“We had a lot of serve-receive errors,” Chavez said. “They were a good team; they played well and we didn’t.”
Dora second in Melrose tourney — The Dora Lady Coyotes finished second on Saturday in the Lady Buff Invitational volleyball tournament, losing 2-1 to the host team in the championship match.
Dora advanced to the finals with a three-game win over Eunice and a two-game sweep of Santa Rosa.
Floyd placed seventh in the eight-team event. The Lady Broncos won in the final round over San Jon in two after losing earlier by 2-0 counts to both Santa Rosa and Eunice.
“It was a tough tournament,” Floyd coach Sean Wootton said. “It was a pretty evenly-matched tournament. We played well at times, but not 25 points at a time.
“For two of our district teams to (make the finals), it says a lot about (District 3-1A).”
