ENMU spikers stretch winning streak to six

The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team used a 15-0 run in the first game to take control and the Zias cruised to their sixth consecutive win, a 30-8, 30-26, 30-18 sweep of Tarleton State Saturday in Lone Star Conference South Division volleyball at Greyhound Arena.
Senior Anna Bellum and junior Lindsay Schiely had 11 kills each for the Zias (18-5, 3-2 South), who improved to 6-0 at home this season. Sophomore Crystal White had nine kills for the TexAnns (13-13, 0-5).
With the score 1-1 in the first game, Bellum’s kill put the Zias ahead and gave them possession. With Amber McCarthy serving, Schiely registered three kills as the Zias scored the next 14 points to take control.
The TexAnns were more competitive in the next two games, but never had more than a two-point lead.
Senior libero Jessica Weeks had 15 digs for the Zias, while McCarthy collected five aces, 13 digs and eight set assists.

Men’s soccer — At Wichita Falls, Texas, Midwestern State unloaded with four second-half goals to hand the Greyhounds a 5-1 loss in a Southwest Soccer Conference match on Friday.
Freshman forward Albert Robinson took a through pass from Martin Gallegos to punch in the tying goal for the Hounds (5-8-1, 2-6-0 SSC) midway through the first half, but the Indians held them off the board the rest of the way.
Myron Davis scored the go-ahead goal for MSU (10-3-0, 7-2-0) just over five minutes into the second half. Chad Rakestraw added two of the final three goals and assisted on the other.
The Hounds had five shots on goal against MSU goalkeeper David Stockton and backup Jason Schultz.
ENMU continues SSC play today with a noon (MDT) clash against St. Edward’s in Austin, Texas.

Women’s soccer — In the first half of Friday’s doubleheader at Wichita Falls, Midwestern’s Crystal Sanchez scored after nearly 71 minutes to give the Lady Indians a 1-0 Lone Star Conference win over the Zias.
ENMU (8-7-0, 1-3-0 LSC) came in ranked in the Midwest Region (10th) for the first time in its two-year history. Midwestern State (9-3-3, 3-2-0) was ranked sixth.
Freshman midfielder Nicole Bregler and senior midfielder Nicole Johnson registered the Zias’ only shots on goal against MSU keeper Elli O’Dwyer. Meantime, ENMU freshman Amanda Vanlandingham recorded five saves in the contest.
The Zias are back in action today with a noon (MDT) start in a conference matchup against Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas.
