Chamber prepares for annual banquet

By Tony Parra

The Roosevelt County Chamber officials are looking forward to their annual banquet which will have a “southwestern flare” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Portales High School cafeteria.
Pat Willis, Roosevelt County Chamber manager, is helping to organize the banquet and said it will be a southwestern decor this year. There will be dried red chili strings as ornaments, fajitas to eat and Tucumcari’s Lorenzo Emilio will perform country music for the banquet attendees.
Emilio said he has been playing music since he was seven years old and his grandfather gave him an acoustic guitar. Emilio said he will play with The Fun Brothers Band from Clovis. Emilio said he has played in Portales for other various music functions such as the Portales Country Club and enjoys visiting Portales.
“The people of Portales have always been wonderful,” Emilio said. “They’re all warm-hearted and I hope to entertain them on Tuesday.”
The banquet will offer an opportunity to recognize some of the chamber members. Willis said chamber officials will give out Workhorse of the Year and Harley and Faye Borden awards during the banquet. Willis said there will not be a Warm Heart of the Sunbelt Award — Thom Moore won the award last year. Willis said the award was given for special occasions, and the only other time the award was given out was in its inception in 2000 when it was given to Lonnie Alexander.
“The banquet should be a lot of fun,” Willis said. “There is no deadline to purchase tickets. I would encourage (people) to get tickets as soon as possible, though.”
Willis said there were 200 people in attendance at last year’s banquet. Dennis Edwards received the Workhorse of the Year Award last year, an award which has been given out since 1964.
The Workhorse of the Year Award is given out to those who have an outstanding involvement in the community.
The Harley and Faye Borden Memorial Award has been given out each year since 1979. The award is given out to a person who has made significant improvements to the appearance of their business or businesses through the previous year. Robert Encinas of Robert’s Television and Appliance won the award last year.
Tickets are available at the Roosevelt County Business Welcome Center. The phone number is 356-8541.
