SHALLOWATER, Texas — Bo Gabriel scored 13 points and Chris Carter added 12 to lead the Portales Rams to a 48-34 win overLittlefield, Texas in the opening round of the Shallowater Shootout Thursday afternoon in Shallowater, Texas.
The Rams (2-0) will face Trinity Christian in today’s semifinal round at 4 p.m. (MST). The Lubbock-based Lions beat Portales 55-35 in the title game of last year’s tournament.
“I’m happy with that when we play those kind of people,” Portales coach Mark Gallegos said. “Trinity might be the best team we play all year long.”
The Rams easily put themselves in position for today’s matchup with the Lions, as they opened a 41-19 lead after three quarters.
Gallegos said the Rams controlled the game with pressure defense, and also cut down on other mistakes from their opening-night win at Muleshoe. The Rams improved their free-throw shooting, hitting 13 of their 15 attempts on Thursday.
“That’s the exact opposite of the other night (Tuesday at Muleshoe) — we were 12-of-25,” Gallegos said. “We talked about that the other day in practice. I don’t know if it helped or not, but it looks like it did.”
