Rams drop third-place tilt to Lorenzo

SHALLOWATER, Texas — The Lorenzo (Texas) Hornets finally made Portales pay for its struggles on offense.
Two 3-pointers by Lorenzo’s Aycock erased a 30-29 Rams lead in the final quarter and the Hornets went on to a 44-32 win in the fifth-place game ofthe Shallowater Shootout.
Aycock, a 5-foot-10 guard, dominated the game on offense. He finished with six 3-pointers and 26 points, and was the only player on either team in double figures.
“We just got outplayed, plain and simple,” PHS boys coach Mark Gallegos said. “We let that one kid get going from the outside.
“We had some excellent looks at the basket, but we had a hard time scoring. And we never got to the (free throw) line.”
Lorenzo converted 17-of-22 free throws in the game to 3-of-4 for the Rams (2-2). Seven of the Hornets’ 10 field goals were from 3-point range.
On Friday, the Rams put up a good effort in the semifinals before coming up short against Lubbock Trinity Christian 49-41.
Chris Kirchner led Portales in that game with 12 points while Chris Carter added 10. The Lions dominated early, building a 28-13 halftime lead.
