PHS falls to Santa Fe in Stu Clark meet

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Turnovers jumped up and bit the Portales High Rams on Monday.
After scoring the game’s first basket, the Rams turned the ball over on five of their next six possessions and Santa Fe High went on to a 62-56 victory in the first round of the 51st Stu Clark Tournament at New Mexico Highlands University.
Portales (4-5) will play Taos, which lost on Monday in double-overtime to Las Vegas Robertson, at 1 p.m. today in a consolation semifinal game, while the Demons (7-2) face Taos in a championship semifinal at 7:30 p.m.
The Rams never quite recovered from their early dry spell, pulling close to the Demons several times only to be turned away.
Trailing 53-52 with 2 1/2 minutes left, Santa Fe converted a Rams turnover into a layup before sinking 7-of-10 free throws in the remaining time to put the game out of reach.
“We had a horrible start, and that set the tone for the game,” PHS coach Mark Gallegos said. “We never got going offensively. Their fullcourt press never bothered us, but they played good, hard halfcourt man defense.”
Dominique Batten, a 6-foot-2 junior forward, scored 17 points for the Demons while senior guard Eric Lucero added 11. They combined to go 17-for-20 from the free throw line.
Portales had a 20-18 edge in field goals, but the Demons went 23-of-33 from the line for the game while the Rams were 13-of-19.
Senior Bo Gabriel scored 14 points to lead the Rams, and senior Chris Carter added 12.
The Rams finished the contest with 24 turnovers.
“We played a little bit better in the second half,” Gallegos said. “But you can’t start the game giving them the ball on five turnovers.
“I was real disappointed with our intensity starting out the ball game.”
