Lady Rams fall for second time to Cavegirls

CARLSBAD — The Portales Lady Rams got off to a good start, then things quickly went sour.
Senior guard Carolyn Smith hit a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers to help bring Carlsbad back from an early 6-1 deficit, and the Cavegirls went on to beat Portales 35-29 Tuesday night, their second win of the season over the Lady Rams.
Smith’s 3-pointers helped Carlsbad (11-3) open an 11-8 lead at the quarter, and the Cavegirls were never headed.
Carlsbad won the first matchup 37-33 at Portales in the Lady Rams’ season opener on Nov. 23.
“They were on us pretty tight,” PHS girls coach Brenda Gomez said. “We didn’t do the things we needed to do to get open against a tight defense.”
Carlsbad led 27-15 at halftime. Portales got within six points with about three minutes left, Gomez noted, but a turnover led to a free throw on the other end and the Lady Rams weren’t able to get any closer.
Smith finished with 10 points for the Cavegirls while Portales, coming off a solid third-place showing in last week’s Plateau Holiday Classic in Clovis, was led by 12 points from junior Megan Kabrick.
Portales, the two-time Class 3A champion, hosts defending Class 4A champion Kirtland Central on Friday and Las Vegas Robertson on Saturday at the PHS gym.
