Fort Sumner beats Floyd, gains finals

FORT SUMNER — Fort Sumner put only one player in double figures Thursday night, but the Foxes dominated the first half and posted a 54-35 victory over Floyd in the District 3-1A boys semifinal.
Junior guard Richard Canales led Fort Sumner (19-9) with 10 points, but five others scored at least six. Junior guard Jerrod Long scored 21 points for the Broncos (16-12), who had only four players reach the scoring column.
The second-seeded Foxes opened a 28-13 halftime lead against the third-seeded Broncos and weren’t seriously threatened after that.
With the victory, Fort Sumner earns a regional berth next week and advances to Saturday’s 7 p.m. district championship game at top-seeded Melrose.
