Affidavit gives further details on case

Odis and Doris Newman were alive when they were locked in the trunk of their car, according to court documents.
Their bodies were found March 3 in the trunk of their burned vehicle.
Details of their deaths were found in an arrest affidavit filed Friday in the case against one of the murder suspects, Stanley Bedford of Portales. Bedford and Jerry Fuller, the victims’ nephew by marriage, each face two open counts of murder and two counts of first-degree kidnapping for the slayings.
Bedford, 41, is being held without bond at the Curry County Detention Center.
Fuller, 32, was in stable condition at a Lubbock hospital on Saturday, recuperating from gunshot wounds he received when a special response team from the Clovis Police Department took him into custody early Tuesday morning at a friend’s home in Portales.
Two others are also being held in connection with the case.
According to the arrest warrant, Fuller told two state police investigators that:
• He and Bedford went to the Newmans’ home on March 2. After being let in, Bedford struck Odis Newman with a pipe and when Doris Newman tried to call 911, Fuller stopped her and bound her with duct tape. Odis Newman was also bound with duct tape.
• While Bedford waited at the house, Fuller tried unsuccessfully to use a debit card to withdraw $400 from the couple’s account.
• When Fuller returned to the house, he put Doris Newman in the trunk of the car. Odis Newman got free, but Bedford beat him again and bound him with tape.
• Fuller and Bedford took the couple’s car to the countryside, doused it with an accelerant and set it on fire.
Bedford was arrested on Monday. He and another man and woman tried to sell four rings belonging to Doris Newman at a Clovis pawn shop, according to police.
Cynthia Peninger, 22, and her boyfriend Archie Crawford, like Bedford, have been charged with possession of stolen property.
District Attorney Matthew Chandler said he does not anticipate further information to be released or futher charges to be filed until a grand jury hearing this week.
Court records show two debit cards and a credit card belonging to the Newmans were used at several locations after the slayings, including two convenience stores in Portales and a truck stop and convenience store in Clovis.
On Tuesday, Fuller was shot and wounded by police after he walked out of the garage of a friend’s house and ignored warnings to put down what turned out to be a pellet gun. Police say Fuller had shouted that he did not want to “hurt those people.”
