DEXTER — The Jal Lady Panthers broke open a close game with a five-run fifth on Thursday and handed Portales High a 10-2 loss in the first round of the second annual Lindsey Calloway tournament.
The Lady Rams (5-4) face District 4-3A rival Ruidoso in a 10 a.m. consolation semifinal game today. They will either play for seventh place at 8 a.m. or fifth place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Ruidoso dropped its first-round game to Roswell High 8-7.
Portales managed seven singles in the contest, led by Sara Silva with 2-for-3. Silva’s two-run single in the bottom of the fourth, driving in Danielle Vasquez and Amanda Terry, brought the Lady Rams within 4-2 before Jal, a perennial state small-school contender, pulled away in the next inning.
Shareesa Nusser pitched a complete-game for Portales in the loss.
Rams JV sweeps Elida — Antonio Lucio went 5-for-6 and picked up a first-game pitching victory as the Portales High junior varsity baseball team swept Elida 10-5 and 16-3 on Thursday at Ram Field.
Lucio went 2-for-3 in the opener and 3-for-3 in the second game. Bryce Chambers was 2-for-4 for Portales in the nightcap.
The Tigers, playing the first two of five games in three days, were led by Tom Sullivan with 3-for-3 and Wesley Gilmore with 2-for-3 in the opener. In the second game, Austin Shrock led Elida, going 2-for-3.
Elida (1-5) plays San Jon at 10 a.m. and Grady at 1 p.m. today and Tucumcari at 1 p.m. on Saturday in a round-robin tournament at San Jon.
