Youth leads PHS to third place

RUIDOSO — With eighth-graders Donavin Sanchez and William Archibeque leading the way, the Portales High boys golf team finished the first day of the Leroy Gooch Invitational in third place in Class 1A-3A team standings.
The final round of the tournament is scheduled for today.
Sanchez shot 35-43 — 78 and Archibeque came in at 38-41 — 79 for the Rams, whose four-man score of 323 trailed only District 4-3A rival New Mexico Military (316) and Class 1A Mesilla Valley (320).
Rounding out the lineup for Portales were senior Dale Welch at 38-43 — 81, senior Trevor Ferguson at 39-46 — 85 and junior Matthew Perry at 43-46 — 89.
Grants and Sandia Prep were tied for fourth place in team standings at 335, followed by Ruidoso Blue 336, Lovington 339, Tucumcari 357, Cloudcroft 373 and Hot Springs 386.
For the PHS girls, Michelle Miller shot a score of 119, followed by Tori Teague at 125 and Lindsay Woodard at 146.
Only three girls teams had full squads — Ruidoso led at 371, followed by Lovington at 447 and Grants at 448. The girls’ individual leader was Ruidoso’s Alayne Lee with an 87.
