PHS splits tennis duals at NMMI

ROSWELL — The Portales High girls tennis team didn’t lose a set all day and cruised past New Mexico Military 9-0 in a District 4-3A dual on Tuesday.
The Lady Rams improved to 11-2 for the season, including 2-1 in district duals. NMMI won the boys matchup 6-3, dropping PHS to 7-6 (1-2).
Portales lost only one game from No. 2 through No. 5 singles in the girls matchup. The closest match of the day came at No. 1 singles, where PHS senior Rachelle Self defeated Cristina Zuniga 6-3, 6-4.
The Lady Rams were just as dominant in doubles, losing just four games in the three matches.
NMMI’s boys took four of the six singles matches, but Portales’ Logan Brown pushed the Colts’ Eric McMahon to a 10-point tiebreaker after the two split sets at No. 3 singles. McMahon took the win-by-two set 12-10.
Brothers Chase and Nathan Acker won for the Rams at Nos. 4 and 6 singles. Chase Acker and Brown teamed up for a 6-2, 6-1 win over McMahnon and Jorge Maynez at No. 2 doubles.

Golf — At Ruidoso, eighth-graders Donavin Sanchez and William Archibeque both finished in the top 10 individually and helped the PHS boys golf team to a third-place finish in the Class 1A-3A division of the two-day Leroy Gooch Invitational.
Sanchez was fifth overall at 159 after shooting a 78 on Tuesday, while Archibeque tied for ninth at 79-82 — 161. PHS shot a team score of 323-338 — 661 to trail Mesilla Valley (636) and NMMI (642).
