ROSWELL — Portales High’s boys put all five golfers within three shots of each other and turned in a season-best four-man score of 313 on Thursday in the NMMI Invitational, good for second place.
Clovis also shot a season-best, finishing at 296 for a comfortable margin in a field of nine full teams.
Eighth-grader Donavin Sanchez led the Rams, finishing eighth individually at 39-38 — 77, while junior Matthew Parker’s round of 41-37 — 78 put him in a three-way tie for 10th place.
Not far behind them were senior Dale Welch at 40-39 — 79, eighth-grader William Archibeque at 38-41 — 79 and senior Trevor Ferguson at 39-41 — 80.
“We played well in spots, but we were able to grind it out,” PHS boys coach Patrick Crowley said. “There were times when they had to grind it out and, across the board, they did just that.”
Crowley said the Rams are rounding into shape with district tournament play coming up in early May at Roswell.
“We’re right where we want to be prior to district,” he said. “The kids are starting to put it all together.”
Clovis senior Guillermo Chavez took medalist honors at 69 — including a six-under-par 30 on the back side — while the Wildcats’ Travis Reid finished third at even-par 72.
Senior Michelle Miller shot an even 100 to lead Portales’ three-girl contingent. Roswell Goddard put up the top five scores on the girls’ side — including an even-par 72 by Kelly Velarde — and ran away with team honors with a score of 325.
