LOVINGTON — Both Portales High track teams finished fourth behind host Lovington, Artesia and Roswell High in Friday’s seven-school Ross Black Relays.
For the boys, the best finishes were seconds by Tyler Johnson in discus (125-8 3/4) and the 1,600 relay team of Steven Heckert, Amador Lujan, Joey Moore and Jason Needham (3:45.10).
Third-place points were posted by Johnson in shot put (43-10 1/2), Justin Jones in the 3,200 (11:31.76), Heckert in the 800 (time n/a), Moore in the 400 (56.26), Lujan in the 100 (11.20) and the 1,600 relay team of Robert Kemp, Wyche, Needham and Jones (4:16.48). Also, Wyche placed fifth in triple jump (37-10 1/4) and sixth in the 200 (24.14), while the 400 relay team of Needham, Eric Segovia, Wyche and Lujan was fifth (48.85).
The girls won two events — Michaela Alexander in the 3,200 (13:09.57) and Jordan Roehl in shot put (34-0) — and picked up thirds from eighth-grader Kelsi Gray in triple jump (30-9 1/2), the 1,600 medley relay team of Desirae Peterson, Samantha Henderson, Samantha Foshee and Caroline Knudson (5:02.0) and the 1,600 relay team of Alexander, Samantha Miller, Kandace Berseiker and eighth-grader Tara Johnson (4:35.99).
Fourth-place finishes were notched by Roehl in discus (91-4 1/2), Misty Miller in long jump (15-0) and the 800 relay team of Samantha Miller, Berseiker, Henderson and Johnson (1:59.16). Henderson was fifth and Gray sixth in long jump, both at 14-9, while the 400 relay team of Henderson, Knudson, Misty Miller and Berseiker came in fifth in 55.75.
The Rams and Lady Rams will travel to Ruidoso for the District 4-3A meet on Friday.
