ROSWELL — Portales made a strong showing at the weekend’s District 4/1-3A tournament this weekend at New Mexico Military Institute, as both the boys and girls team made the state tournament along with six individual players.
The Lady Rams, who have won the last two state team championships, will go in as the district champons with a 6-3 win over Ruidoso and a 9-0 win against Lovington. The wins move Portales to 15-3 on the season.
The boys team did not win the district, falling 7-2 to the host Colts. Portales had earned a spot in the state tournament already Saturday morning with a 9-0 win over Ruidoso. The boys moved to 9-7 with the Saturday split.
Chase Acker was the only boys player to go undefeated on Saturday, as he accounted for Portales’ only singles win and worked with Logan Brown to notch a victory in No. 2 doubles.
Acker will also be going to the state singles tournament, as he captured third place. The only negative was that he had to beat teammate Matt Tucker 6-2, 6-0 to do it. Only the top three competitors in each event move on to state.
Acker will join five other Portales players for the individual competition. Portales won both doubles brackets — Chance Plummer and Chris Kirchner took the award for the boys, Rachelle Self and Kaycee Quick for the girls.
Also advancing to state is Morgan Erf, who won the girls singles while Bethany Self advanced to state with a third-place finish.
Portales tennis coach Bill Wahlman didn’t say what kind of expectations he or his players had, but said he was pleased with the results.
“The only thing that would have been better is if we won (boys’) singles,” Wahlman said.
Individual competition will run Wednesday and Thursday in Albuquerque, Wahlman said. The eight-team competition will begin Friday. If Portales’ teams win on Friday, they will play twice on Saturday.
