GRANTS — The Portales High boys golf team finds itself in a big hole in the state Class 1A-3A tournament — in part because of Mesilla Valley Christian.
The tiny Las Cruces-based school, with only four players, shot a team score of 290 to open a 14-stroke lead over New Mexico Military and St. Michael’s after the first day of the tournament at Coyote del Malphis Golf Course.
Meantime, the Rams struggled. Junior Chris Adkins’ 78 was the best they could do and and left Portales tied with Sandia Prep for seventh place at 319.
“The weather wasn’t a factor,” PHS boys coach Patrick Crowley said of the near-perfect conditions. “We just missed some fairways. We didn’t do the things that got us here.”
Senior Dale Welch and eighth-grader William Archibeque both came in with 79s for the Rams, while senior Trevor Ferguson carded an 83 and eighth-grader Donavin Sanchez finished at 89.
Crowley said there wasn’t much anybody could do about Mesilla Valley’s stunning 6-over team total.
“Every time you looked up, those guys were hitting solid golf shots,” he said.
Crowley said the Rams will go back to work in today’s final round and try to do what they can to move up.
“We were scrambling all day, and when you’re playing that way the bogeys are going to show up,” he said. “We’ve dug ourselves a huge hole.”
All four Mesilla Valley players shot either 72 or 73 on the par-71 layout. The individual leader after the first day is St. Michael’s Brandon Putnam, who shot a 69.
St. Michael’s has the team lead in girls competition at 361, two shots ahead of Socorro. Ruidoso is third at 375.
Glynnis Price of Shiprock is the girls’ individual leader with an even-par 71.
