Elida back in state baseball tournament

Dylan Radcliff led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple, then scored the winning run on a passed ball as Elida won the Region B championship, 11-10 over Mesilla Valley Tuesday at Ram Field in Portales.
The Tigers will face Gallup Catholic to start the state tournament next week. That game is set for 11 a.m. Monday at Cibola High School.
“I’m not sure if they were as excited as I was,” Elida coach Jimmy Dale Ward said. “I was pretty excited myself, especially to win like that.”
Ward said the Tigers had not been in the state tournament since 1975, when he was a sophomore at Elida.
“I was on the team and I got to go, but I never got on the field,” Ward said. “My junior and senior year, we (didn’t advance past) regionals.”
Wesley Gilmore struck out six batters in the complete game victory, and the Tigers got a 3-for-3 day from Austin Schrock and a 3-for-4 day from Caleb Widener.
“He pitched a good game,” Ward said of Gilmore, who threw 110 pitches in the win. “Most of the time, when he gets around 100 pitches we pull him.”
The tournament included three teams, with Elida playing the winner of Mescalero and Mesilla Valley. Mesilla Valley won that game 11-1 in five innings.
As the district champion, Dora earned an automatic berth into the Class 1A tournament. The Coyotes will open on Monday as well with a 10 a.m. game against Texico at St. Pius High School.
