Funding bill comes out of committee

A spending measure that passed the committee level Thursday contains funding for Eastern New Mexico University and an economic development project in Portales.
Tthe Senate Appropriations Committee that Thursday passed the FY2006 Transportation, Treasury, the Judiciary and Housing and Urban Development (TTHUD) Appropriations Bill. The measure, which provides $620,000 for science and technology equipment at ENMU, will now be considered by the Senate.
“I am pleased to see funds provided for ENMU to furbish its new science center,” said U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.). “Every student who passes through the school doors will have access to high-tech equipment and a new facility that will hopefully help foster greater dedication to the science field. I hope for swift action on this bill so ENMU can continue to make its programs stronger.”
The funds will be used to purchase molecular and cellular biological equipment, as well as equipment used for microbiology, biochemistry, physical chemistry, anatomy and physiology.
The bill also includes $200,000 in economic development funds for the city of Portales to renovate the Yam Movie Palace.
As part of a downtown revitalization effort, the city of Portales has embarked upon the renovation of the movie palace. After renovation, the theater will be used for movies, concerts, receptions, live theater, meetings, parties catered events, dances, educational presentations, and art exhibits. U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) requested funding for the theater, along with other items for the state.
“There is no doubt that downtown revitalization will bring a major economic boost to the City of Portales,” Bingaman said. “I am pleased these funds have been included for the Yam Movie Palace.”
