The state of New Mexico certified every teacher at Portales Junior High School to teach their respective classes. Some teachers were certified in one field, i.e., math, language arts, science, or social studies to teach K-12. Some teachers were certified to teach any subject K-8. Now the state of New Mexico changed the rules and required teachers of seventh and eighth grade students to have additional hours for each subject. Because of the rule change, some teachers may not yet have finished the additional hours to be certified “high qualified” according to the new rules.
To comply with Public Law 107-110, Section 1111(h)(6)(A), Principal Steve Harris issues a “Notice to Parents” concerning qualifications of teachers. It states, “At your request, the District will provide the following information: (1) whether the teacher has met state qualifications for licensure for the grade level and subjects being taught by the teacher; (2) whether the teacher is teaching under a teaching or assignment waiver; (3) the teacher’s degree major and any other license or graduate degree held by the teacher; and (4) the qualifications of any instructional support providers if the student is served by educational assistants or other instructional support providers.
If you would like this information, please submit a written request to Steve Harris, 700 East 3rd St., Portales, NM 88130. Please let me know if you have any questions, Best regards, Steve Harris.
