After five years in business in downtown Portales, Jenny Montiel of Reflections Hair Studio admits things aren’t exactly what she had envisioned when she opened — but that’s because she’s been more successful than she dreamed.
“I honestly thought I would be here working by myself,” said Montiel. “But it’s really grown.”
Reflections opened in October of 2000, before Montiel had even finished cosmetology school.
The business offers full service hair care, waxing, tanning and facial makeovers. Brand name products they use and sell include Redken, Matrix and Paul Mitchell.
“I’ve always wanted to do hair my whole life,” said Montiel. “My dad knew the guy who owned this building and got a good deal on it.”
When she got the building it was divided up into several rooms, but with lots of work over time Montiel has transformed the vintage downtown building into an inviting shop with room for six stations.
Two years ago she added nail and facial rooms. The classy black and white tile floor replaced old linoleum about a year ago.
The other distinguishing characteristic about the business is the creative window displays and seasonal decorations.
“We’re known for our windows,” said Montiel. “Lots of people say ‘I came by just to see your window designs.’”
Montiel says she thinks that extra effort helps her business because people see the creativity and equate that to the skill and creativity the staff at Reflections will take on a client’s appearance.
“We could not be successful in this town without our clients,” said Montiel.
The studio has four hair stylists, including Montiel. April Tipton has been there nearly since the beginning with four years, Cyndee Flen has been there 1-1/2 years and Billie Rains just recently joined the staff. Tori Teague works at the reception counter.
Montiel says her business is strictly a booth rental salon with each of the stylists paying rent and working their own business. She also stresses that all four work hard to keep up with their continuing education to stay on top of the latest trends and issues in the industry.
“We went through some trials and tribulations but God has blessed us,” said Montiel of her time in business. “I’ve had some great co-workers throughout the five years. It’s a really fun atmosphere here.”
“There’s never a dull moment,” chimes in Tipton, looking up from a client’s head.
The business has received Best of Portales awards for “Best Hair Salon” from 2003-2005 and was named Business of the Month in January by the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce.
During the anniversary celebration Reflections will be having drawings for product giveaways as well as offering $5 off on chemical services.
The business, located at 300 S. Main is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
