Several local businesses have received fraudulent checks in recent weeks, according to a release from the Clovis Police Department.
Business are encouraged to use the phone directory to verify bank phone numbers on checks are valid, the release said.
The scammers are printing checks with phony account numbers and bank phone numbers, said Lt. James Schoeffel.
Duped businesses tried to verify the authenticity of the checks by calling the phone number listed on the check. They talked to a suspect involved in the crime who verified the fictitious account information, the release said.
“There have been a handful of victims,” Schoeffel said.
