The Department of Housing and Urban Development released funding on a $496,000 Economic Development Initiative grant that will allow Eastern New Mexico University to purchase equipment for its new communications center. The announcement came through press releases from both U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici’s and U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman’s offices Friday.
Domenici, a member of the congressional appropriations committee, gained the earmark funding grant in 2004, said the press release. It is the first of two major federal appropriations the senator secured for the university, the other is a $620,000 EDI for science and technology equipment for the new science center under construction.
“I am very happy that these funds are now available to Eastern so it can complete its new telecommunications center. The equipment will, I believe, improve the school’s already good reputation as a training ground for journalists,” said Domenici.
“I am pleased the funding awarded today will benefit Eastern New Mexico University students and will provide them with the equipment they need to learn,” Bingaman said.
The communications facility is home to KENW TV, public radio as well as classroom and office space.
