Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer coach Travis McCorkle announced the signing of five incoming freshmen to national letters of intent for the 2006-07 school year.
They include Ashley Arguello, a 5-foot-6 forward from Castle Rock, Colo. (Ponderosa H.S.); Alexandra Atherton, a 5-6 defender from Odessa, Texas (Permian H.S.); Alexandra Barilla, a 5-8 defender-midfielder from Las Vegas, Nev. (Bishop Gorman H.S.); April Funck, a 5-7 midfielder-forward from Amarillo (Amarillo High), and Samantha Lawrence, a 5-8 forward from Roswell (Goddard H.S.).
Arguello was a two-year letterwinner at Ponderosa and served as a team captain, while Atherton played four years at Permian and was selected for “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” in 2005 and 2006.
Barella was also a four-year letterman in high school, earning team MVP honors in 2002. She scored 29 goals during her career and was the school’s career assist leader.
Funck is in her third year on the Amarillo High varsity, and will join her sister Anna at ENMU. Anna Funck, who will be a senior, has played for the Zias since the program’s inception in 2003.
In her four seasons at Goddard, Lawrence earned Class 4A all-state honors twice and all-district honors three times, including recognition as district player of the year last fall. She scored 77 goals and had 64 assists during her high school career.
The Zias enjoyed the best season in their brief history in 2005, going 10-8-1 overall (3-5-1 Lone Star Conference). They outscored their opponents by four goals for the season despite taking 43 fewer shots.
