LOVINGTON — Portales continued its domination of District 4-3A, holding host Lovington to six total field goals and four second-half points in a 66-21 dismantling Saturday night.

Portales (18-7, 5-0 district) had 11 players score, and only two reached double figures in a balanced effort.

Portales only led Lovington (8-17, 2-3) 10-8 after the first quarter, but took care of matters with a 28-9 second quarter.

“Defensively, I felt that we stepped it up and got a lot more aggressive,” Portales coach Brenda Gomez said. “We did it out of our man, and we did it out of our zone.”

Gomez said it was a physical game throughout, and senior Ashleah Richards had to go to the hospital and get stitches after getting a cut above her eye going for a loose ball. Richards still managed to score eight.

Bethany Self scored 15 points to lead Portales, while Tara Johnson added 12.

Lovington managed just a free throw in a 21-1 fourth quarter, and had nobody come close to double figures. Jasmine Hernandez led the Lady Wildcats with four points.

Portales hosts Ruidoso Tuesday in the opener of a district doubleheader, then has a break until the Feb. 25 District 4-3A championship at Portales High School.
