When one thinks of art meccas, cities like New York, Paris and Rome come to mind. Levelland, Texas doesn’t roll off the tongue when thinking of a place to view great art, but Levelland boasts a “small, but impressive collection of art pieces donated by Marjorie Merriwether Post, the daughter of cereal magnate C. W. Post,” according to the Levelland Chamber of Commerce.

The collection of paintings, which can be viewed at the South Plains College Library in Levelland and in the college’s Fine Arts building, includes a portrait by the 17th century English master Joshua Reynolds.
The city of Levelland also has a number of large mosiacs around town. In fact, Levelland now calls itself the “City of Mosaics.”

The college campus is not far from downtown shopping along the town square.

From Portales follow U.S 70-East out of town and turn right onto Highway 84-East. Follow Highway 84 all the way to the Levelland exit and turn right onto U.S. 385-South. Follow U.S. 385 straight to the main entrance of South Plains College. Someone in the public information booth at the entrance will be able to direct you to the paintings and the mosaics.

The drive should take just under two hours. Levelland is 92 miles from Portales.

The mosiacs can be seen for free anytime day or night. The hours of the South Plains College Library are as follows: Monday -Wednesday: 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday: 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.

How the collection began
South Plains College is on land once owned by Post. His daughter Marjorie donated the paintings from the family’s private collection. The mosaics were begun about 35 years ago when an enterprising art instructor at the college gathered some art students and asked them to think big. The mosiacs have been written up in the Dallas newspapers and a husband and wife team are currently negotiating to create yet another large mosaic in Levelland.
WHAT ELSE Is the area Famous for?
The late country music icon Waylon Jennings was born in Littlefield which is just a half hour north up U.S. 385 from Levelland.
