LOVINGTON — Portales got solid pitching from junior Sasha Parker and just enough offense Saturday to post a pair of wins in the District 3-4A predistrict softball tournament, beating host Lovington 5-0 and topping Ruidoso 3-1.
Parker pitched three-hitters in both games, and nearly had two shutouts — she had Ruidoso blanked until the bottom of the seventh.
“I’m pleased with getting the wins,” PHS coach Robbie Crowley said after her team improved to 10-6 for the season. “The kids hit the ball pretty well, and Sasha’s really coming along.”
The Lady Rams broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning against Lovington when Jessica Adkins doubled home Amanda Terry and later scored on an RBI groundout by Vicki Huber. They added three in the fifth on Rebekah Gonzales’ two-run double and a sacrifice fly by Adkins.
Parker finished with nine strikeouts and four walks against the Lady Wildcats.
Portales then pushed over a couple of runs in the top of the second against Ruidoso and Parker, who issued no walks and struck out five in that one, made the lead stand up.
Gonzales went 2-for-3, including an RBI double in the second. She later scored on a single by Sabrina Villaneuva, who also finished 2-for-3.
The Lady Rams made it 3-0 in the seventh when Santana Brito singled, stole second and continued all the way around on a throwing error by the catcher.
Maricruz Cole also had two hits for the Lady Rams, who finished with 10 hits altogether.
PHS begins its regular district slate at home on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Ruidoso.
