Ollie Vernon

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Portales Cemetery

Ollie Vernon, 88, of Portales died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.

Born Jan. 13, 1918, in Sentinel, Okla., to Ethel and William A. Moore, she grew up in Dell City, Okla. She married D.C. Vernon on July 16, 1934. In 1936 they moved to a farm southwest of Portales with all of her family. They lived in a tent until the house could be enlarged to accommodate everyone. In the late 1940s and early ’50s she worked as a clerk at Glenn’s Grocery Store. In 1953, she and her husband moved to Bakersfield, Calif., where she worked for several years at a combination café, bar and grocery store, serving as a cook and as a clerk in the grocery section. In about 1980 they moved back to Portales. She was a cook at Jimmy’s Café and later at the Wagon Wheel Café, where she continued as the breakfast cook until only a few years ago. She enjoyed crocheting and made countless baby clothes, doll clothes and afghans, family members said.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1985; parents, two brothers, Floyd and Andrew Moore; four sisters, Florence Cox, Pauline Vernon, Mae Reed and Lavern Jones; and a son, David Vernon, who died as a young child.

She is survived by her two brothers, Jay Moore of Kent, Wash., and Donald Moore of Truth or Consequences; and several nieces and nephews.

All her family and friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

F. D. Rogers

Services: 10 a.m. Monday at The Chapel, 1500 Thornton St.

F. D. Rogers, 90 of Clovis died Friday, April 21, 2006, at his home.

Born Oct. 14, 1915, to William J. and Myrtie C. Hogg Rogers in Comanche, Texas, he married Eva C. Stowe on June 5, 1937, in Clovis. He was a public school teacher for 25 years, and a farmer, dairyman and rancher. He was a member of Sandia Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife of the home; three daughters, Clardine (and husband, Raymond) Goff of Albuquerque; Sylvia Yarbrough of Midland, Texas, and Rosa Preston of Cleburne, Texas; brother, Lynn T. Rogers of Riverside, Calif.; sister, Dell Stroud of Carlsbad; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
The Rev. Fred Caton will officiate services. Burial will follow at Mission Garden of Memories.

Pallbearers will be great-grandsons Brand, Tyler and Chance Fraze, Garrett Goff, Jordan Wilson, Bobby and Adam Vinson, Brantley and Kirby Wheeler, and Justin Burrus.
