PNT receives second place

ALBUQUERQUE – The Portales News-Tribune won an award for second place in column writing Saturday at the 2005 New Mexico Associated Press Managing Editors award banquet.

The entry was by Managing Editor Karl Terry for a column entitled “Grandma Terry” remembering the life of his grandmother following her death last fall.

Terry’s columns appear each Sunday in the PNT.

The PNT’s sister newspaper, the Clovis News Journal took home five first-place and 16 total awards at the banquet.

The CNJ staff earned first place for its continuing coverage of the Base Realignment and Closure process involving Cannon Air Force Base, while staff writer Marlena Hartz and Editor David Stevens garnered the top honor in spot news for their coverage of a report of a junior high student with a rifle that turned out to be a 30-inch burrito.

Other CNJ staff members earning first-place awards were Eric Kluth in photo essay and Managing Editor Rick White in sports writing and headlines.

The Daily Lobo took home best in show in Division C with 24 awards, ending the CNJ’s run of four straight in the category.
