Portales is holding a summer girls basketball tournament that starts today at 8 a.m. and runs through Saturday.
Girls basketball teams from Hobbs, Roswell, Goddard, Texico, Capitan, Lovington and Portales high schools will be competing in the two-day event.
Each day there will be 26 games held in the Portales High School gymnasium and eight at the junior high. The tournament hosts a varsity division as well as a division with junior varsity and freshmen.
The tournament is purely recreational; no trophies or prizes will be awarded.
“Everybody that comes just wants to get the kids playing more and work on their basketball skills,” said Brenda Gomez, the coach of the Portales team. It is a way to get them ready for the next season, but mainly to just have fun, she added.
Summer tournaments such as this are held all over the state. Hobbs held one previously this summer and Las Cruces does a few, according to Gomez.
This will be the second year Portales has hosted a girls summer basketball tournament.
