Station pleased with annual auction

Sheryl Borden, director of marketing for KENW-TV and producer of the station’s tele-auction, is pleased this year’s seven-day tele-auction met its fund-raising goals.

Borden said the station raised about $65,000 this year, utilizing 2,000 items for sale.

“The auction started out a little slow during the first three days,” Borden said. “But it picked up around Thursday, and by Saturday we ended up selling enough in order to raise the amount of money we had hoped to make.”

The goal was between $65,000 and $70,000, according to KENW officials.

Borden said the station was successful in selling a packaged trip to London to Ruth Jacko of Seguin, Texas. The packaged trip is worth $3,500.

Borden was pleased that the station also sold all of their “Superboard” items, which included furniture sets donated from McDaniel’s Furniture and Valley Furniture, a packaged vacation to the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa in Santa Ana Pueblo, and two packaged vacations to the White’s City Resort.

As an incentive to promote overbidding, Borden said the tele-auction held a drawing this year in which bidders were entered in once for every dollar they bid above the price of an item.

The winners of the drawing won gas coupons from Town and Country. The three winners were Kathy Craig of Wolfforth, Texas, Brian McAlister and John Olivarez, both of Clovis.

A list of unsold items has been posted on the station’s Web site at, and Borden said they hope to have them sold by the end of June.

Duane Ryan, the director of broadcasting at KENW, said the tele-auction program went great this year and will certainly help defray programming costs for the station.

“It’s a community effort and everyone worked really hard,” Ryan said. “We’re grateful of all the volunteers who helped out and sacrificed their time, the donations from local businesses and individuals and those who helped publicize and promote the auction.”

Borden said winning bidders need to pick up and pay for their items at the KENW station by the deadline of June 23.
