The Quay County All-Stars rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat the Roosevelt County All-Stars 8-7 Saturday evening at Portales High School Ram Baseball Field in the 13-14 year-old division.
The loss meant the Roosevelt County All-Stars must win today against Clovis American or they will be eliminated. Their game against Clovis American will be at 7 p.m. at Ram Baseball Field.
Paul Carrillo scored two runs for Roosevelt County helping them take a 6-1 lead into the top of the fifth inning. However, that’s when things began to unravel for Roosevel County.
“We started out playing perfect innings,” Scooter Rutherford, Roosevelt County coach, said. “We played good baseball and had our confidence up. We went down because of the errors and fell apart. That’s (errors) what hurt us, but that’s baseball.”
Quay County scored four runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-6. The Quay County All-Stars scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the 8-7 lead.
Jordan Maestas pitched for the Quay County All-Stars to pick up the win. Maestas struck out two batters in the seventh inning to protect Quay’s lead.
The winner of tonight’s game between Clovis American and Roosevelt County will play the Quay County All-Stars for the district championship.
