An 88-year-old Portales man was in serious but stable condition in a Lubbock hospital on Wednesday after he was beaten and robbed at his home, police said.
Police said Wednesday they had no suspects.
Nabor Leal of 724 W. 15th Lane was found unconscious and transported to Roosevelt General Hospital and then to Lubbock, Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said.
Police believe the incident, which Berry termed an aggravated burglary or a robbery, occurred between 4:45 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday at Leal’s residence.
Berry said it appears an assailant entered the residence, struck Leal in the head with a weapon, and took his wallet before leaving the residence. He said police believe the weapon used in the beating was left at the scene, but he would not say what type of weapon was found.
Berry said Leal lives alone, but was found unconscious by family members shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Berry said police spent Tuesday night processing the crime scene and canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence. Police returned to the scene Wednesday during the same time of day the crime occurred, in the hopes of locating someone who might have seen anyone in the area on Tuesday.
Berry said police had talked to a good number of people in their investigation but were still looking for a solid lead.
“If there happens to be anybody we haven’t talked to who thinks they might have information, we would really like to hear from them,” Berry said.
Police said they believe only Leal’s wallet was stolen.
