The Portales volleyball team began their pursuit of a fifth state championship in seven years on the road Tuesday night by sweeping Hobbs 25-21, 25-11, 25-15.
Portales coach Ruth Chavez liked her team’s effort against the Class 5A team.
“Game One was a little shaky. The girls made some errors, and those led to bigger problems. But they worked through it,” Chavez said. “It’s not that (our girls) were on their heels, but we had a little trouble lining up defensively.”
The Lady Rams hit their stride, however, in the second set.
“In the second and third games our passing and serving was much better, and we had great hitting from Bethany Self and Jordan Roehl.”
Roehl and Self are two big reasons that Chavez is excited about the coming season.
“This was a good start for us on the fundamentals, and that’s what we were looking for out of this first result,” Chavez said.
Portales plays in the Clovis Invitational this weekend.
Chavez thinks Tuesday’s match will help prepare the girls for that challenge.
“We normally don’t have a match before the Clovis tournament, so this is a good positive result and a great beginning for us,” Chavez said.
The Portales JV won its match 25-18, 25-21.
