TUCUMCARI — Quay County Manager Terry Turner died on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Officials would not comment on the cause of death for Turner.
A family friend said Wednesday night that funeral services had not yet been scheduled.
Medics were called to the Quay County Courthouse at 3:35 p.m., where Turner, 60, was found not breathing on the stairwell between the second and third floor, according to police reports.
A code blue alert was sent out for a second medical unit and Turner was transported to Trigg Memorial Hospital, reports stated.
“We are all in shock and we’re all just grieving,” said Mayor Mary Mayfield. “I feel it personally, and as mayor.”
Turner grew up in Tucumcari and graduated from Tucumcari High School. Before becoming county manager on April 1, 2004, he worked for the Johnson and Johnson subsidiary Ithicom Endo Surgery in Albuquerque.
He often said that he came back to work for the county because he thought it was important “to give something back to the community.”
“He did give back to the community,” Mayfield said. “He was a credit to the community and I think we were progressing. He had a spirit of cooperation and vision for the the future. He also worked well with other agencies here and in the state.”
At Tuesday’s County Commission meeting, Turner talked about ways that the county could get more funds for road improvements and plans for a booth that would be displayed advertising the benefits of Quay County at the upcoming state fair.
