Freshmen make adjustment at ENMU

Editor’s note: With the fall semester at Eastern New Mexico University beginning this past week, the PNT decided to talk to freshmen about making the adjustment to college life.

Q. Why did you choose ENMU?
A. “Something different from what I’m used to.”

Q. What is the hardest adjustment you have had to make?
A. Moving from one country to another, culture shock.”

Q. What are some of the issues you have had to deal with as a college freshman?
A. “I’ve had to learn how to slow down my speech because of my accent, and only knowing three people in the country.”

Q. How have you dealt with these issues?
A. “People here are really nice and that’s helped to make friends. I’m learning some American words.”

Q. What was the biggest fear about starting out on your own?
A. “Not knowing anyone and being a 26-hour journey from home.”

Q. How have you handled the adjustment of being away from family and friends?
A. “A lot of e-mails and photos all over my wall and Aussie music.”

A. “ Because it is a small school and the people here seem like they want you to succeed.”

Q. What is the hardest adjustment you have had to make?
A. “Being away from my family and my dog.”
Q. What are some of the issues you have had to deal with as a college freshman?
A. “Sudden rush of freedom. Having to learn how to manage your time, no one telling you what to do and homesickness.”

Q. How have you dealt with these issues?
A. “My boyfriend goes here, that helps, and calling home two or three times a day.”

Q. What was the biggest fear about starting out on your own?
A. “Not being able to adjust.”

Q. How have you handled the adjustment of being away from family and friends?
A. “I think I’m handling it pretty well. I always call my mom and she encourages me.”

A. “Because I could play tennis and it’s close enough to go home when I miss my mom.”

A. “Not having my mom here to talk to all the time, homesickness.”

Q. What are some of the issues you have had to deal with as a college freshman?
A. “No money and having to be on a budget.”

Q. How have you dealt with these issues?
A. “Not spending a lot.”

Q. What was your biggest fear about starting out on your own?
A. “That I’d oversleep and not make it to class.”

Q. How have you handled the adjustment of being away from family and friends?
A. “Good, I just talk to them a lot on the phone, texting and e-mail.”
