School band ready to perform
Under Band Director Cindy Stone, junior high band students are preparing for their first performances. The entire band will march with the high school band at the home football game Sept. 29. The next morning the advanced band will march and play in the Eastern New Mexico University’s homecoming parade.
Stone reports that the students are already producing some great sounds and she expects a fantastic year of musical performances.
Labor Day means no school Monday
Portales School students and employees get a day off Monday as they join America in celebrating Labor Day.
Fund-raiser ends Wednesday
Principal Steve Harris said all order forms for the fund-raiser must be turned in Wednesday. The students are raising money for the school improvement fund.
Students to elect council officers
This week the halls at PJHS are decorated with campaign posters promoting candidates for student council offices. Friday students meet to listen to campaign speeches before they cast their ballots.
Report from the school cafeteria
Head cook Rosie Lucero asks students to help keep the cafeteria in good order. She reports that students are being careless about keeping all wrappers together and emptying trays after the breakfast. Lucero and Harris ask parents to remind their children about being neat at school.
Volleyball squads going to Texico
Both the seventh- and eighth-grade “A” teams travel to Texico Thursday. There is a possibility that the “B” teams may play.
Football teams set to play Gattis
Tuesday the seventh-grade team hosts Gattis with a fifth-quarter game. On Thursday, Gattis’ eighth-grade team travels to PJHS.
First-of-year forms need to be returned
Harris asks parents and students to fill out and return all the first-of-year forms to the school. Funding sources often use the free and reduced lunch counts to determine eligibility for the school.
